Almost Yesterday

December 8, 1980.
A girlfriend and I decide to go sit in our college dorm's sauna after dinner. The halls are quiet and a little dark except for the occasional strand of Christmas lights. People are studying for finals or they're just gone for the evening. Some people will graduate in a few days and have already hit the bars. The Dixie Chicken is full this night.

We get our fill of the steamy heat and the relaxing smell of cedar and we step out into the dressing room where a radio is playing the last part of John Lennon's "Imagine". It's not on especially loud, but there's a DJ talking and then the song "War is Over". Two songs in a row by the same artist makes us curious. It's Christmas so I turn up the sound while we change into warmer clothes and shake the dampness out of our hair. Again with the DJ, only this time I hear the word dead and I turn it up. The station was KLOL in Houston and the voice tells us that some loser has just shot and killed John Lennon. The DJ is crying and we are stunned.

Had he lived, he would be 65. Just imagine.

Wordgirl, your writing is just amazing. I don't remember what I was doing when John Lennon was shot. But I do know where I was when Stevie Ray Vaughn's plane went down. Thinking of one, reminds me of the other. Thanks for a beautiful piece.

so many great men and woman have been murdered or assassinated for no good reason, it's just senseless, one can't understand it.

Imagine what the music would would have been like if there was no John Lennon. His life was senselessly cut short by the hands of another and the only way to reason with that is to be glad we had him making music for as long as we did.

I was in my bedroom with the radio on and heard it announced. I was in 9th grade and never a Beatles fan but did like the song Imagine.

I can't believe you were at the Dixie Chicken. That part made me laugh. You're such an Aggie.

Ours was the only one on campus that had one. Female athletes lived in the basement of our dorm, so it was there for them to use, but we could use it whenever we wanted.

The male athletes had an entire dorm to themselves PLUS a dining hall. Isn't that always the way?

No fancy-ass at all. Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Imagining John Lennon at 65? It isn't that hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for. And we have Paul McCartney, to compare him to.

Sorry, that was bad.:)

We saw Paul McCartney in concert a couple of years ago. I closed my eyes and it was 1969 all over again. Sorry...that may have been before your time. Or not! Shrinking Violet and I were chatting about the fact that Sir Paul needs to just let that gray hair grow out and quit coloring it. He needs a shaggy coif and a beard. He's still rockin' those bedroom eyes, though.

wordgirl, did you hear about Lenon's controversial interview recordings that were released this week?

It is definitely hard to believe he'd be older than my dad! I think Sir Paul is still mighty cute (saw him in concert a couple of years ago, too.)
