5 reasons I'm still a feminist

Here's a sampling of what happens when women hand over their brains/bodies/futures to the decision-making of men. Click on these websites and discover with fresh horror the atrocities being committed in the name of patriarchal entitlement. (I'm sure that none of my male readers would fit into any of these groups)

1) Prairie Muffins: No...it's not the same as a cowpie, but it's still a load of crap. A pile of crap dressed in a denim jumper. Okay...maybe not the denim-wearer's fault, but it's definitely the fault of the guys they married.

2) You just thought these rules applied to your mother and grandmother, but guess again sister! There's a whole movement of mindsnatchers out there just waiting to turn every woman with ambition, intelligence, an original thought, and a creative mind into only a shadowy notion of what she wanted to be.

3) ASSHAT OF THE YEAR...and for more reasons that I can possibly list here. Here's hoping that if God ever gets back into the "smiting" business, Pat Robertson will be at the top of the list. Note to Pat: God is not talking to you. Those really are just the little voices in your head. But if He/She ever did start talking, it would only be to tell you to SHUT THE HELL UP!
4) Here's a clue gents: Polygamy is just an attempt to legalize the tragic fact that some of your less-intelligent bretheren can't keep their pants zipped until they get home to the "little woman".
Boys, if you've got a hankering for owning a herd of anything at all, do us ALL a favor: Get a truckload of sheep and leave women the HELL alone!

5) Rusty Yates with Victim--er--captive--I mean--Wife #2. Poor, delusional Andrea Yates needs to be in a mental hospital for drowning her helpless children, but her husband should be serving the prison term for forcing her to be his unpaid servant and continuous baby incubator while ignoring her mental illness. Hey Rusty, check out your new wife's expression. Is that doubt that I see..or did she just get a text message from Katie Holmes that said, " Even I feel srry 4 U. Get out now!!"

So....yeah...send me your nominations for the losers who chap your ass the most. Right now, I know all this is pretty negative, but I'm feeling the birthday blues and...well...you know....the whole "what's life all about" ennui.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you for saying that Rusty Yates should be in prison.

Anyone who expects and encourages a chronically-depressed schizophrenic who has attempted suicide to stay home 24/7 with five children ages 7 years to 6 months bears some responsibility for what happened. Her doctors, social services, her extended family, and most of all, her husband--failed her and failed those innocent children who paid the ultimate price for all the supposedly sane and educated adults in their life having their heads in the sand. No, Andrea Yates can't be given her freedom--shed did after all kill FIVE people--but those who chose to ignore the OBVIOUS should be held accountable for their actions as well. She should never have been left alone with her children.

Asshats is right!

I think I'd add in the people who are working to make abortion illegal, and anyone at work who dares call me "sweetie." I'm 27, I'm a lawyer, I'm a woman. I'm either giving you free legal advice ('cause you're a criminal) or trying to get your friend out of jail. You don't know me, I'm not your sweetie, I'm someone you need to respect not demean with pet names. Grrr! (ok rant over, I'll step off my soapbox).

This was a great post.

I so totally agree about all of these, but especially Rusty Yates. I actually wrote a letter to the editor of the Dallas Morning News when it ran the story a while back that he was divorcing Andrea and planned to remarry. They made him out to be some victim. GAH! I hate that man.

This post really struck a nerve with me today.

Heather--I TOTALLY hear you.

I'll add another: doctors who tell me when I "should" be ovulating and dismiss my trying to tell them when I actually AM ovulating. As if they know my body better than me, based on a textbook menstrual cycle that doesn't mirror reality any more than a department-store mannequin mirrors a real body.

Prarie Muffin? Prarie Muffin?

Sad, sad, sad. No other word to describe it.

And Rusty Yates should be sterilized.

WG, THANK YOU for not being afraid of the "F" word. You have no idea how much that means to me.

I would like to nominate Travis Frey, the man who put together a wifely contract that was beyond belief (see it here: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0217062contract1.html).

We could also add Roger Hunt, the South Dakotan rep responsible for sponsoring that state's ban on abortion, even in the case of incest or rape (he thinks "special circumstances" would have diluted the bill's impact).

That first 'manifesto' made me ill. It reminds me of the fundamentalist groups I see in the mall and at the park - the women in their netted buns and long homemade dresses. They're always smiling, happy, but I feel so angry at what they're being forced into. The little girls that are trying to run and play on the playgrounds with their dresses getting caught in the jungle gym...

I was going to link to that smokinggun piece that Mrs.H posted. It's mind-boggling.

I love the idea of cutting off Rusty's 'nads.

Andrea didn't get to where she ended up BY HERSELF. He totally contributed with his controlling self. Don't get me started.

Happy Birthday WordGirl.

I'm so with you on Rusty Yates. He's just as guilty, of what happened to his children, if not more so.

Religious extremists. Whoo, don't get me started on this. That polygamy link made my stomach hurt.

I'd like to add Maury Povitch et al (and I include Phil McGraw in this category) who use the unfortunate circumstances of less than intelligent women for media sport. They make me sick.

The thing about the Prairie Muffins is that many of them have blogs. Read a few and you'll see women straining against the imposed limits of their lifestyle. They believe they're following some holy "code" of gender-specified behavior, but they're just nothing more than slaves. A lot of these women sound very depressed.

Same with women in polygamous marriages. Did you know that Mormons --as a group--have one of the highest rates of female depression and many take meds for it? Also a lot of White Collar crime, but that's another post.

Here's my question for those fundamentalists who believe in a holy heirarchy of obedience:

Why is it that guys are supposed to get their "orders" from a presumably perfect entity (God/Yaweh/Jehovah/Allah) and women have to follow orders from flawed individuals with a self-serving agenda?

Where's the justice in that?

One word: "HORRIFYING!" Although you did make my utter horror a humorous journey at least. Thank god for women's lib!

Yup. Rusty should be accountable for the deaths of his children too. No doubt about it.

Large amounts of Asshat-ery indeed. Here's something to think about though.

We do have to keep in mind that some women CHOOSE to be in their cultural lifestyle, not all are born into these cultures. Also, keep in mind that there are levels intricate levels of "order" and not all of these communities are as extreme. Be careful of blanketing.

The point is that they have a choice. They can join, or leave (though the latter is the harder part). The next step toward progression is to make resources and programs available to those that "need"/desire them. Remebering that our sisters before us laid the tracks of our freedoms, now we must maintain and make them accessible. The choices made by others may not be the choices we would make, but it's still our duty to keep the doors open if the want to be opened.

BTW - Rusty Yates is a criminal, I agree.

Also, my above comment was addressing the wider variety of communities that incorporate traditional gender roles. Not just the polygamist communities.

Happy Birthday!

I'll add to the list - any man who says the female orgasm is a myth must have his toenails pulled out.

Oh, and another one: my ex-boyfriend who tried to pressure me to have sex explaining that he was at his sexual peak and didn't want to be a virgin anymore.

1. Just weird

2. Funny actually.

3. Never really listened to him othen than in the media. We don't really travel in the same circles.

4. This would extend to a woman with a few studs?

5. True. However, mental illness can't always be spotted ahead of time.

6. You'll have to excuse me, but sometimes I miss the humour if it's supposed to be funny, but if you think these are feminist issues then I'd have to vote for you. Sorry.

Other losers:

One of my cousins who is trying to marry for money and not love.

Another cousin who thinks he's the Godfather and a great stud.

An aunt who caused an everlasting schism in her family.

Most of my blog. I never realized until recently that I had to work at writing.

Any woman who just hires women.

Any employer who hires women over men simply because he/she feels that he has to.

Patriarchs or Paddy's (I like that more) are entitled to respect for who we are, just as you are.

By the way according to the Sun, you people are smarter, but we maintain our moods better, and are less likely to suffer depression. http://www.nysun.com/article/29659

So I won't elect Hillary president, but if I'm president I'll accept her on my team as a key adviser.

Whoops! The you know what is getting deep even for my boots.

I can only say happy birthday because if I got started on all the the motherf*ckers out there (in South Dakota alone) I am sure i would self-combust. Focusing on raising a feminist boy at this point who first does no harm. Know you feel me on that one. Happy birthday!

First of all I agree with you about Pat robertson (are you shocked) - I wish he'd shut the fuck up.

And I have always felt the same way about Rusty Yates. I was actually in Houstoin on bidness when alot of this stuff came down - I couldn't believe the pass it seems the press and all have given him. I'm a guy and I could tel from the first interview on TV he was a mindcontrolling dickhead.
